From February 20–23, 2020, industry leaders from across the self-insured healthcare ecosystem gathered in Sunriver, Oregon for the Veritas Allies Healthcare Consortium—an intimate, purpose-driven event designed to foster meaningful dialogue, authentic relationships, and actionable collaboration.
Unlike traditional conferences, the Consortium was intentionally structured to prioritize connection over crowds and conversation over sales pitches. Every element—from the venue and agenda to the activities and shared meals—was designed around a simple belief: the relationship precedes the success.
Confab Sessions: Driving Forward the Collective Conversation
At the heart of the Consortium were Confab Sessions offered in both 20- and 60-minute formats. These interactive discussions were built to engage and educate attendees while encouraging open dialogue, real-time Q&A, and idea-sharing across roles and organizations.
Company promotion was welcomed, but always within the context of advancing the group’s collective understanding of cost containment, reference-based pricing, and the realities of operating within a self-insured environment.
The conversations were candid, strategic, and refreshingly practical, focused not on theory, but on what actually works.
Designed for Connection
The Sunriver setting played a critical role in shaping the experience. With access to the Bend–Sunriver area’s outdoor activities, attendees had countless opportunities to connect beyond the conference room.
From shared meals and collaborative cooking to informal conversations during excursions, the event created space for relationships to form naturally.
While extracurricular activities such as skiing, snowshoeing, dog sledding, and other adventures were optional and at attendees’ discretion, they added to the sense of camaraderie that defined the weekend.
And yes—the food lived up to the hype.
“In my opinion, the charm and intimate nature of the Consortium is what I believe is most effective, and the food ROCKED TOO! … when vendors and payers alike want a true connection, this format makes the best sense.”— Ken Meyer, President, Complete Benefit Administrators
A Community, Not a Conference
One of the most consistent themes echoed by attendees was the sense of belonging and alignment felt from the very first session.
“From day one, the attendees made me feel like I had been a part of their circle of friends for years. Everyone was warm and welcoming and made me feel at home immediately.”
The Consortium reinforced a shared philosophy: self-insured plans are not hiring partners to simply process claims—they are hiring them to save money, improve outcomes, and protect members.
That shared mindset made the conversations deeper, the relationships stronger, and the outcomes tangible.
By the end of the event, attendees were already putting ideas into motion—sending RFPs, exploring new partnerships, and continuing conversations that began in Sunriver.
“I’ve already sent my first RFP to several of the carriers that I met while there… The relationships I made will surely last the rest of my life.”
More Than Business
While strategy and collaboration were central, the Consortium also embraced the importance of balance and fun.
Activities included:
Hiking
ATVs
Shooting sports
Outdoor excursions
Unique, off-the-beaten-path experiences
These moments created shared memories that set this gathering apart from traditional industry events.
Looking Ahead
The 2020 Healthcare Consortium reinforced the power of intentional design—bringing together the right people, in the right setting, with the right purpose. It wasn’t about volume or spectacle. It was about trust, transparency, and building a community committed to doing healthcare better.
We’re grateful to everyone who joined us in Sunriver and look forward to continuing these conversations well beyond the mountains of Central Oregon.
